Peristaltic pumps function by allowing fluid to enter the tubing, which is then compressed by a rotor with multiple rollers inside the pump housing. This compression forces the fluid to continue through the pump and directs it to its destination, a technique known as peristalsis. Hence, this tool is referred to as a peristaltic pump.


While peristaltic pumps may not be commonly seen in daily life, they have a significant market presence, particularly in applications related to fluid transfer. For instance, high-end dishwashers and washing machines with automatic detergent release programs rely on peristaltic pumps to transfer liquids during the washing process.


The tubing used in peristaltic pumps must meet several requirements. Firstly, due to the different types of fluids being transferred, the tubing material must be corrosion-resistant. Secondly, the tubing must be flexible or durable enough to withstand the repetitive compression process, which may occur thousands of times within an hour.

Because peristaltic pumps operate based on pressure and displacement and are used to transport fluids through tubing, with certain parts of the pump not directly contacting the liquid, they are ideal for sterile fluid transfer applications in the medical field.


Expanding on the applications of peristaltic pumps, they are also commonly employed in laboratory settings for precise fluid dispensing, in industrial processes for chemical dosing and metering, and in wastewater treatment plants for transferring various fluids and chemicals. Moreover, peristaltic pumps are increasingly being used in the food and beverage industry for accurate ingredient dosing and in the biotechnology sector for cell culture and media transfer processes.


In addition to their role in fluid transfer, peristaltic pumps are valued for their ability to handle shear-sensitive and abrasive fluids, their gentle pumping action that minimizes product degradation, and their ease of maintenance due to the tubing being the only component in contact with the fluid.
